Attached at the Heart

Married in 1957, Gary & Susan raised five sons in South San Jose, celebrating this last May, their 64th anniversary, at Westwind Memory Care Community. Both were diagnosed several years ago with dementia, but little has changed with their daily routines. Together they walk the community, participate in activities, and enjoy dining with each other.

Gary, a repairman for AT&T and then PacBell, officially surpassed more years retired than working several years ago and loved visiting states and cities with Susan. Susan, a homemaker, raising five rambunctious boys. Together they enjoyed seeing the sights but were always by each other’s side.

Still recognizing each other and their son Rick, Gary and Susan, who cannot care for themselves but light up when the other walks into the room. A married couple that recognizes each other is a rare occurrence in memory care. This loving couple dotes on each other throughout the day running through activities or enjoying nature in the courtyard.

“They were separated for about a month when my mom Susan was hospitalized,” said son Rick. He continued, “she would pace, my dad would pace, and they could not explain necessarily why, but both were missing each other. As soon as they got back together, it was just like the old days of traveling the countryside in tandem, laughing, talking, and loving each other.”

Congratulations on your 64th Anniversary Gary & Susan! Specials thanks to Rick for providing Westwind Memory Care Community with photos and stories. For more information about Westwind, please contact us today at 831.421.9100 or visit us online at westwindmemorycare.com
